Japan ordered to pay compensation for death from overwork

TOKYO — A court in central Japan has ordered the government to pay compensation to a woman who argued that her husband died from overwork at Toyota Motor Corp.

The woman's lawyer says Kenichi Uchino had been putting in long hours while working as a middle manager at a Toyota factory.

The lawyer says Mr. Uchino worked 80 hours of overtime a month for the last six months before his death, and had logged 114 extra hours the month he died.

He collapsed at work and died in February, 2002, at age 30.

The lawyer says Mr. Uchino's wife filed the suit after a local Labour Ministry office rejected applications for worker's compensation benefits she filed after her husband's death.

But a court official says Friday's ruling orders the government to reverse the decision and pay compensation. There were no details as to how much she would receive.

Death from overwork, known as “karoshi” in Japanese, has steadily increased since the government first recognized it in 1987.

The government acknowledged 147 cases of death from overwork from 303 applications in the year ending in March, 2007, according to ministry figures.

Toyota, which was not involved in the suit, said the company was not in a position to comment.
