Su Guo (style name Shudang, sobriquet Xiechuan jushi) was the third son of Su Shi (Dongpo) ,the famous literateur-artist of the Northern Song. Excelling at poetry and prose, Su Guo also specialized in painting and calligraphy, being renowned as “Little (Dong)po.” This letter was sent by Su Guo to a deputy county magistrate named “Yisun,” the contents telling how Su had received a present of “Mt. Lu tea” from Jiangxi and that he wished to share half of it with Yisun. Su also included with the letter a small amount of “Jian tea” from Fujian. Su Shi wrote, “The poetry of my son Guo is like that of his father.” In fact, Su Guo’s calligraphy actually does come from the same mold as his father’s. The brush force of the calligraphy in this letter is vigorous and the character forms elegantly upright and angular yet richly varied, which indeed has his father’s manner. This work is from “Album of Calligraphy by Three Song Generations of the Su Family from Meishan.”
