劇中一直稱呼約翰布萊克索恩(柯斯莫賈維斯飾)為「按針」,究竟是什麼意思?這個名字其實是「領航員」的意思,就像海上的指針,船要開往哪裡,全都要跟著領航員 ...
William Adams was an English navigator born in 1564 who became the first Englishman to reach Japan in 1600, arriving aboard the Dutch ship De Liefde.
His journey began as part of a five-ship expedition organized by Rotterdam merchants, but only his ship made it to Japan after being scattered by storms.
Upon his arrival, Adams gained the favor of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who would later become the shogun.
Adams was recognized for his knowledge of shipbuilding and navigation, which led to his appointment as an advisor and samurai, known in Japan as Miura Anjin (三浦按針), meaning "the pilot of Miura."
He played a pivotal role in introducing Western shipbuilding techniques to Japan and was instrumental in establishing trade relations between Japan and European countries, particularly the Netherlands and England.
Adams's influence extended beyond trade; he was involved in Japan's Red Seal trade, which allowed Japanese ships to engage in commerce with Southeast Asia.
He even led several expeditions to secure goods for Japan.
Despite his success, Adams longed to return to England, where his wife, Mary Hyn, and their two children lived.
However, while in Japan, he married a Japanese woman named Oyuki without formally divorcing Mary.
In the end, he decided to stay in Japan and remained there until his death in 1620.
His life inspired the character John Blackthorne in James Clavell's novel Shogun, which was adapted into a television miniseries.
