Cotton was a major export crop in the US, but the production was slowed down enormously by the need to manually remove the seeds from the raw fiber. Cotton grows from the seed, much like hairs. Removing the seeds was slow and painfully tedious work. The invention of the cotton gin remedied that. The machine was a set of wire teeth attached to a revolving cylinder. The cotton was pulled by the teeth through the slots in a metal plate, but the seeds were too large to pass through the slots. The seeds were then freed from the fibers by a second cylinder with brushes. Eli Whitney patented the cotton gin in 1794. He was born on this date in 1765.
